 Meshcore Node Naming Guide

This guide outlines the standardised naming convention for MeshCore infrastructure nodes (Repeaters only). It ensures consistency, readability, and compatibility within a 23-character limit.

Segment Definitions

Field Length Description
SSS3 3 State/Province/Territory, uppercase (e.g. VIC, NSW)
LOC12 12 Up to 12 characters of locality (e.g. MELTON, GEELONG, CHELTENHAM)
TYPE3 3
  1. COR = Core: Long backbone links to join smaller distribution areas together with less hops. High elevation mountain-top/tower mounted nodes in remote locations. Independently powered (i.e. not grid-tied) with battery backup. May use directional or omnidirectional antennas. Companion nodes typically would not connect directly to a core node.
  2. DIS = Distribution: Mid to long range links with reliable connectivity to at least one core node and ideally multiple other distribution nodes to provide path redundancy. Typically at a high elevation point within a suburban area and used to join edge repeaters to the wider mesh. Independently powered (i.e. not grid-tied) with battery backup. Should only use omnidirectional antennas. Not to be used for rooftop/residential nodes.
  3. EDG = Edge: Rooftop and residential nodes. Any elevation OK. Reliability not a strict requirement. Mains power acceptable.
  4. MOB = Mobile: Vehicle-mounted, on-person carried, and temporary nodes. Wild west; anything goes.
ID2 2 2 digit number (01-99) identifying the node.

Rules

  • All segments are separated by single hyphen (review the Naming Format heading at the top of this page).

  • Total name must not exceed 23 characters.
